Oxted School

Policy Statement

TITLE:                         ADMISSIONS POLICY

                        MAIN SCHOOL

MANAGEMENT:   HEADTEACHER

DATE APPROVED: JUNE 2009

REVIEW DATE:    JUNE 2010

Rationale

Oxted School is a local authority maintained school and therefore operates the admissions procedures set by Surrey County Council, Education Department.

Terms of reference

Surrey County Council is the admitting authority that is responsible for the provision of school places.  This policy statement details the admissions criteria ratified by the Council.  These criteria are used to allocate places when the school is over-subscribed.

Aims:
  • To ensure that school places are offered in a fair and consistent way
  • To maintain the comprehensive and community ethos of Oxted School
  • To maintain the NOR (number on roll) at a manageable level

In order to do this the school will:

á      Use the following admissions criteria

Admissions criteria for entrance to Year 7:

There will be a fixed catchment area for the School as set out in the map that constitutes Appendix 2 of the AuthorityÕs School Admissions Policy for September 2010.

The September 2010 admissions criteria are as follows:

1. Looked After Children

2. Exceptional arrangements

3. Siblings

4. Those children who both live in the catchment area and who attend one of the following partner/feeder schools: Crockham Hill (Kent), Dormansland, Godstone, Holland, Lingfield, St. CatherineÕs, St. JohnÕs, St. MaryÕs,  St. StephenÕs, Tatsfield and Woodlea.

5. Those children who live in the catchment area but do not attend one of the partner/feeder schools listed in (4) above

6. Any other applicant

The tie-breaker within each criterion will be those who live furthest from the nearest alternative school as measured by a straight line

Waiting lists are held and maintained by the LEA.  Vacancies will be filled according to the criteria for the appropriate year group at the time.

Principles agreed by the Governors

á      The interests of the school community as a whole should determine the development of procedures and practices within the Admissions Policy

á      The Admissions Policy should operate in a way consistent with, and complementary to other school policies and current disability legislation

Appendix 2

Note 1

The fixed catchment area is determined by the LEA, in consultation with county councillors, Headteacher and school governors.

Note 2

The parents of a child with a statement of special educational needs can nominate a preferred school.  A place will be offered provided that mainstream education is appropriate for the child in question, that the school can provide for the specific needs of that child and that their needs will not pose a threat to the education or well being of other students.

Note 3

The school has a unit for children with a visual impairment, with a maximum capacity of 18 irrespective of ages of the individuals.  These places are over and above the PAN (published admissions number).

Note 4

The school will not accept children beyond the limit of the PAN for the year group in question, unless required to do so by the appeals process.  The school will oppose appeals for places.
